The preliminary investigation suggests Castillo was driving south on Interstate 495 at about 10:30 p.m. Monday whe, “for reasons still under investigation,” she lost control of her vehicle and drove off the highway, troopers said. Castillo drove her vehicle back onto the roadway, but it then flipped, ejecting her, according to car accident reports.
A second vehicle then struck Castillo’s, followed by a third, according to investigators. The other two drivers were identified by authorities only as a 41-year-old Plaistow, N.H., man and a 61-year-old resident of Monson. Neither was injured.
“Ms. Castillo was determined to be deceased as a result of injuries sustained in the crash,” authorities wrote in a release issued Monday afternoon.
An extensive investigation ensued, requiring the closure of the southbound lanes of the interstate for more than three hours. Crash reconstruction experts assisted investigators at the scene.
Multiple agencies were listed as assisting at the scene. They included the Andover Police and Fire departments, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
