Troopers said no additional injuries were reported and no other vehicles were involved.
According to car accident reports, troopers were called to investigate a report of a vehicle found off the roadway on Massachusetts 24 near Exit 20 in Randolph at about 8:20 p.m. Sunday. Troopers found a single vehicle that had struck a tree near where they observed a mattress in the middle of the roadway.
The Massachusetts State Police in a press release Monday identified Thomas as the vehicle’s only occupant. He apparently had already succumbed to his injuries, car accident reports state.
The mattress was retrieved from the highway. Crash reconstruction experts were called to the scene to assist with the investigation.
“It is unclear at this time if the mattress on the roadway was a contributing factor to the crash,” authorities stated in the release.
Investigators did not say whether they suspect additional contributing factors, such as intoxication or speed. It also wasn’t immediately clear how the mattress had come to rest in the roadway.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by officials from several local agencies. They included the agency’s Crime Scene Services Section, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the Randolph Fire and Emergency Medical Services departments and the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office.
