According to car accident reports, Hawks at about 7:50 a.m. Wednesday was eastbound on U.S. 80 when his vehicle veered into the highway’s median. Hawks reportedly overcorrected and his vehicle rolled.
Car accident reports state Hawks was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the incident. He was ejected during the wreck, sustaining serious injuries.
First responders transported Hawks to an area hospital, where he later succumbed to his wounds.
Details about what investigators believe led to the crash have not been publicly disclosed. Troopers continue to investigate the incident, and will explore any factors, such as speed, that might have contributed to the crash.
Hawks’ death prompted friends to launch an online fundraiser to help the family cover the costs of transporting the body back to Idaho, in addition to funeral expenses. More than $2,000 had been raised as of Sunday evening, and the campaign has a stated goal of $10,000.
“Anything that we all can do to help this family would be greatly appreciated,” Hawks’ friends wrote in the fundraising post. “Matthew was a great son, brother and worker. If asked, he would go to or do what he could. Matt was a dedicated worker and a big part of the (employer) family.”
