Investigators determined a vehicle heading south on Lierly Avenue approached a red light at the intersection of Wood Street. The motorist ran the stop signal and crossed the intersection out of turn. As a result, the traffic offender crashed into a second car, an eastbound Ford, driven by Herrera on Wood Street.
Following the collision, both vehicles skidded off the road and drove into a building located in the 500 blocks of Lierly Avenue. Hererra’s car ended up wedged against the front porch of the home, leaving the female motorist trapped in the wreckage.
Police said the Chevrolet driver, later found to have been under the influence, abandoned his vehicle and escaped on foot. Deputies intercepted him at South Tenth and Crystal streets and took him into custody. Jail records show the unnamed driver faces charges of felony driving under the influence and hit-and-run resulting in injury.
The CHP is investigating the tragic incident.
