Staskievich at about 8:40 p.m. Friday was allegedly driving north in the southbound lane of Interstate 495 a few miles outside of Westborough. She eventually collided head-on with a southbound vehicle being driven by Nazare, according to car accident reports.

Nazare died from his injuries at the scene before he could be transported to a hospital for emergency treatment, troopers said. An 83-year-old woman who was in the vehicle with him at the time of the wreck was taken to UMass Lakeside in Worcester where, as of Saturday, she was considered in critical condition.

Emergency medical personnel also transported Staskievich to the UMass hospital, but she later succumbed to her wounds, according to car accident reports. No one else was in her vehicle at the time of the wreck, troopers said.

Traffic was shut down on the interstate until nearly midnight while investigators worked at the scene, according to car accident reports.

Several agencies, including state police, the Westborough Police Department and the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, are investigating the release. Troopers have not yet said whether they have a theory about what caused Staskievich to drive against traffic on the interstate.
