Investigations revealed that the crash happened when a 1994 Honda Del Sel travelling through the south traffic lane two suddenly slowed down and was struck from behind by a 2015 Lexus GS 350 plying the same route.
The collision forced the Honda to sway left and crash into the center divider of the roadway. Almost at once, another vehicle, a 2016 Lexus ES 350 travelling through the freeway collided with the left rear end of the crashed car, causing it to be set ablaze.
Efforts by other road users to rescue the motorist from the burning vehicle proved abortive. The male operator of the Honda, who has now been identified as Kenny Duarte, 30, died in the fiery car wreck.
Authorities disclosed that the occupant of the Lexus, a 62-year-old female whose identity was withheld suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Burbank, for adequate medical attention.
No further information concerning the incident was disclosed. The CHP is still investigating the fatal accident.
