A motor vehicle accident occurs when a car strikes another, a person, debris, or stationary objects like a tree, a signpost, a mailbox, a fence, or a pole. Crashes can either be a single-vehicle accident, two-vehicle collision, or multiple-vehicle collision. The last two are mostly head-on, rear-end, or broadside collisions.
Sometimes, a vehicle collides with a person, motorcycle, train, or bicycle. The preceding and the above can lead to a series of legal issues after law enforcement agencies determine who caused the accident. The legal issues are either criminal or civil, and an offender can also face both.
The standard criminal charges arising from a car crash are hit-and-run, driving under the influence (DUI), or vehicular manslaughter. A person can face one of the trio or all at once, depending on the circumstances of each case, and a conviction means time in jail amid other punishments.
The civil lawsuit would be either a personal injury or wrongful death action, depending on whether the victim lives or dies. A conviction means payment of damages to the victim or his or her representative.
