The SLPD used tips from witnesses to trace the man to his home on Herbert Avenue in South Lake Tahoe and placed him under arrest. They charged him with felony hit-and-run. There is no additional information.
A person faces a hit-and-run charge if he or she fails to stop at the scene of an accident. California prosecutors charge the offense as a misdemeanor or felony and must prove certain ingredients to secure a conviction. First, they must show that the offender was involved in a vehicle accident.
Next, the prosecutors would have to prove that the accident caused damage to someone else’s property or injured a person, and the defendant knew that the crash caused property damage or injury. They would also prove that the offender failed to remain at the scene of the incident, and did not leave his or her contact.
As a defense, the offender must prove that he or she was not aware that an accident happened, a person suffered injuries, and there was no damage to property. Possible punishment includes time in jail and payment of a fine.
