The fatal crash occurred at 10:51 a.m. causing traffic backup for nearly 10 miles. ADOT said that the loss of Dorizio is a reminder for drivers to always stay alert, especially along construction sites.
ADOT Director John Halikowski said that the lives of dedicated staff members of the transport department are always at risk when carrying out repair works. He described the death of the transport worker as a loss for everyone.
The director said Dorizio was a dedicated and committed member of the ADOT community. He embodied the agency’s mission and did all he could for the people of Arizona.
The deceased has been working with ADOT since October 2015 as a highway operations worker. He worked mostly in the Maintenance Unit and the newly created Incident Response Unit.
Road workers getting killed is not a common occurrence in Arizona. Dorizio is the first ADOT worker to die while working on the highway since 1998.
ADOT did not state if the driver that knocked down the man was arrested, or if he or she will get charged. Investigations are still ongoing with the DPS taking point.
