As per the initial investigations, Mauricio Lopez appears to have lost control of his vehicle at the intersection. His vehicle then collided into two utility poles of Southern California Edison.
The incident occurred late in the evening on Sunday, July 26. It was reported to the authorities at around 7:30 p.m. Lopez sustained critical injuries as a result of the collision. Once the paramedics and law enforcement personnel arrived on the scene, attempts to revive him failed. He was pronounced dead on the site of the crash.
The utility poles into which Lopez’s car crashed also sustained significant damage. The collision detached the wires from one of the poles while also pulling off the light cover on another pole. Following the incident, police closed down Broadway as repairs were being performed on the damaged utility poles.
Authorities initially withheld Mauricio Lopez’s identity pending notification to the next-of-kin. His name as the victim of the incident was finally revealed on Monday. California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident. Subsequent accident reports may reveal other details about exactly how or why the incident came to be.
