The deceased was a front-seat passenger in a ’96 Acura Integra driven by a 21-year-old female identified as Lisa Chavez. The young woman, who was heading north on Highway 33, was making a left turn onto Sullivan Road when she collided with a 2017 Nissan Sentra driven by Luis Cruz, 25, of Santa Nella.
Hernandez sustained fatal wounds, and the medics pronounced him dead at the accident scene. They took Chavez to the hospital for treatment after she complained of pains, and Cruz did not sustain any wound.
The CHP did not provide any additional information about the accident. The investigation remains active, and they will update the public once they have more details.
Under California law, a person who causes an accident that leads to the death of another is liable to face a charge of vehicular manslaughter. The latter would only occur when the investigators uncover evidence that proves that the driver acted negligently.
A conviction of the charge means jail time and a fine, and the deceased’s family can also bring a wrongful death lawsuit to recover damages. In either case, it is prudent to hire a car injury lawyer for advice and representation.
