The man was heading north on the highway when he drifted for unknown reasons into the opposite lanes heading south. The act caused him to collide head-on with an oncoming dump truck, with the impact wrecking the Nissan.
Gerard’s wife — name withheld — was a passenger in the ill-fated vehicle, and paramedics took her to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The driver of the dump truck did not sustain any wound, and the accident led to the closure of the southbound lane for several hours.
The CHP said that the roadway was reopened at about 1 p.m., and the investigation into the cause of the accident remains ongoing.
Reports of car accidents among older drivers show that although older people can drive into their 90s, they are prone to have crashes for various reasons. One of these reasons is an underlying medical condition brought on by the advancement in age.
Traffic officials advise older drivers to focus on the roadway while driving and maintain the speed limit. When unwell or impaired in any way, park at the side of the road, call 911 or seek a different means of transportation.
