The teens were in a 1999 Mercury that was driven by 18-year-old Terrance Hunter. They were driving eastbound on State Highway 63. Reports indicate that the car was traveling at a high rate of speed. Hunter had one passenger in the car, 16-year-old Dewight Fowler.
At some point in their commute, Hunter lost control of the vehicle while they were driving at a high rate of speed. The car hit the guardrail along the side of the highway. This caused the car to travel off the roadway.
Once leaving the roadway the car did not stop until it struck a tree.
It was not released if either teen was wearing a seatbelt at the scene of the accident.
After arriving at the scene, police and paramedics removed the teens from the vehicle. They were unsuccessful at attempts to revive them. They were both pronounced dead at the scene of the accident due to the extensive injuries they sustained in the accident.
There is no report if impairment is suspected in the accident. The Texas Department of Public Safety is still investigating the accident and the circumstances surrounding it.
