In a recent obituary, 64-year-old Stephen Blaine’s cause of death was due to complications from the Coronavirus on April 11. Blaine succumbed to the virus while living at Andover Subacute, a nursing home in New Jersey. The same nursing home that is currently under the microscope due to their procedures for handling the Coronavirus and deaths related to it.
On April 13, a discovery made at Andover Subacute led to surveys conducted by the state as well as Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The reports indicate that 17 bodies were found in a holding area at the facility that is only suitable for 12 at maximum capacity.

The controversy comes from statements by Andover Subacute stating that they were reporting these incidents to the state as directed, but the state said it was not aware of it. Family members were also unaware of the Coronavirus status of some residents and the subsequent deaths due to it.
New Jersey has now compiled a list of nursing homes and their Coronavirus numbers. At the top of the list, as of April 20, was Veterans Memorial Home in Paramus. The facility has a confirmed number of 155 cases of COVID-19. The facility also tops with the number of confirmed deaths at 39.
Number two on the list was Andover Subacute with 106 confirmed and 31 dead. Based on the most recent figures for New Jersey, a total of 4,070 deaths have been recorded to date, with the Coronavirus being the cause. Of this number, 40% are attributed to long-term care facilities.
With the current conditions in the long-term care facilities, Governor Phil Murphy has not dismissed the idea of sending in the National Guard to help at these facilities.
