The Texas Department of Public Safety responded to an accident call at 6:14 a.m. on March 21 just outside of Canton. The accident occurred along State Highway 198.
Preliminary investigations reveal that a 2006 Hyundai Sonata, driven by 29-year-old Canton resident Donald James Long, was traveling northeast on State Highway 198 when he approached a curve in the road.

Police have not determined why Long’s car left the roadway to the west, but when it did, his vehicle traveled along the ditch before striking a driveway. The car became airborne, striking several fence posts before coming to rest striking into a tree.
Authorities called Judge Sandra Plaster to the scene of the accident. She pronounced Long dead at the scene of the accident from the injuries he sustained. He was transported to Eubanks Funeral Home in Canton from the scene of the accident.
The report did not indicate if Long was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. There was not a public release of the extensiveness of his injuries during the accident. There has not been an indication released to the public as to why Long left the roadway prior to entering the curve.
The police have not offered up information about whether they believe that impairment was a factor in the accident. A full investigation is being conducted into the accident. It is not clear if an autopsy is planned for Long at this time. As the investigation concludes, more information will be available.
