Based on the preliminary reports prepared by the Texas County Department of Public Safety, a passenger car with four occupants was driving east on eastbound Interstate 20 at an unsafe rate of speed for weather conditions. This caused the car to begin hydroplaning on the roadway.
The car left the roadway and entered a grassy area before hitting a tree and rolling.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as 20-year-old Hesler Alberto Quintanilla-Rodriguez of Baton Rouge. Emergency medical services retrieved him from the car and transported him to Longview Hospital, where he is currently listed in critical condition.
One of the passengers, 27-year-old Jose Nahum Santamaria-Quintanilla, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident from the injuries that he sustained. His body was transported to an area funeral home.
29-year-old Heydy Morales and a 10-year-old passenger were also taken to Longview Hospital for injuries in the accident. Neither of them was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. Longview listed the two passengers as being in stable condition.
The accident is currently under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety. All of the occupants in the car were from Baton Rouge, but it does not appear that anything other than speed and weather were factors in the accident.
