Two people survived an auto-motorcycle collision on Sunday night, August 31st, at an intersection on Illinois Route 1 in the Westville area of Illinois. The accident report listed the two victims as Shane A. Green, 29, of Georgetown, and Jared Nelk, 27, of Clark Hills, Indiana.

A press release by the Illinois State Police revealed that at about 9 p.m., Green rode a black 2020 Kawasaki Sport motorcycle south on Route 1. A Vermilion County Sheriff’s Deputy tried to pull the man over, but he fled from the scene and ran a stoplight while the light facing him was still red.

At the same time, Nelk, who had a green light, pulled his tan 1997 Saturn SL1 into the intersection on Main Street. Green’s motorcycle then crashed into the front end of the man’s vehicle. The motorcyclist sustained severe injuries and received treatment at an area hospital.

The ISP cited Green for failure to slow down to avoid an accident and disobeying a stoplight. VCSO Capt. Michael Hartshorn said they issued additional charges against the man for aggravated fleeing and eluding, driving with a revoked license, and possession of methamphetamine.

Nelk did not suffer any injury from the collision, and he was not issued a citation. There is no additional information.

Running red lights, and driving through intersections without exercising care and caution are two of the common causes of traffic accidents. Operators of motor vehicles and motorcycles should desist from the two to prevent crashes and save lives.
