The driver of the semi, 41-year-old Roman Sydoruk, did not get far enough over and hit Powell. Responding agencies on the scene included the Illinois State Police, Cornbelt Fire Protection District, Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, Mahomet Police Department, and the Illinois Secretary of State Police.
Powell, transported immediately after the accident, has been listed critical at Carle Foundation Hospital. There were no other updates from a spokesperson for the hospital regarding his current condition.
Sydoruk did not sustain any injuries in the collision with the bicycle. The Illinois State Police ticketed him for improper passing. Just because the citation got issued doesn’t mean that Sydoruk will not face other repercussions from the accident later on.
An Illinois bicycle accident attorney may become retained by Powell or a close family member due to the negligence of Sydoruk.
The accident caused Illinois Highway 47 to shut down for almost 5 hours while state police investigated the scene.
