The California Highway Patrol said that Marez was traveling south in a 2000 Triumph motorcycle when he suddenly swerved into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with an oncoming 2006 Honda sedan. Officer Benjamin Corner said the man traversed a sweeping right-hand curve and was unable to maintain his lane.
The Honda driver, identified as 40-year-old Felipa Torrez Hernandez, was traveling between 30 and 35 miles per hour and was unable to avoid the motorcycle. Marez died at the scene, and the medics pronounced him dead. The motorist and two of his passengers suffered minor wounds and received treatment.
The motorcycle caught fire after the collision; the flames extended into a brush, and the county firefighters had to put it out. There is no additional information about the crash at this time.
Auto-motorcycle collisions are one of the leading causes of crash-related fatalities. They are preventable if riders and drivers follow traffic rules and maintain the speed limit.
