According to the preliminary investigation from the Plainfield Police Department, Cruz was a passenger in a Toyota Camry. The driver of the Camry, a 37-year-old man, was going east on Route 126. This was east of Meadow Lane.
The driver then lost control of the vehicle. The Camry went into the westbound lanes with oncoming traffic. A BMW X5 hit the passenger side of the Camry, where Cruz was riding.
When police officers arrived on the scene, Cruz, of Spring Valley, Illinois, was pronounced dead immediately. The Will County Coroner’s Office identified Cruz.
The driver of the Camry received serious injuries. Medical services then airlifted him to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, which is in Downers Grove. The driver is in critical condition, according to police.
The driver of the BMW was a 58-year-old woman who received only non-life-threatening injuries. She was in stable condition and was transported to Rush-Copley Hospital, which is in Aurora, Illinois.
According to Stratton, first responders needed to use a heavy extrication device to free the drivers and passenger from the vehicles.
Route 126 was closed until 3 a.m. on Feb. 14, 2020, due to the crash.
