Ronald Hite struck another vehicle and was killed after his vehicle crossed the centerline on Dexter Road in Effingham County, Illinois, on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2020.
62-year-old Hite, of Mason, Illinois, was headed northbound on Dexter Road in a GMC Yukon. The accident happened east of Altamont, Illinois, at the Interstate 70 overpass, south of U.S. Route 40. This was around 10:15 a.m.

Hite then crossed the centerline of the road into oncoming traffic. A Chevrolet pickup truck that was heading south collided with Hite’s vehicle. Chauncy Kuhns, 34, was the driver of the vehicle. Kuhns is from Altamont, Illinois.
Coroner Kim Rhodes pronounced Hite dead at the scene.
Bryan Hite, 37, was a passenger in the GMC Yukon. The first responders took Bryan Hite to HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, according to the coroner’s office. Bryan Hite was then airlifted to HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois.
Kuhns also suffered injuries. A family member took him to HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, where he was transferred to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois, for more treatment.
Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies, the Illinois State Police, the Altamont Fire Protection District, the ISP Accident Reconstruction Team, and Abbot EMS all responded to the scene.
An autopsy on Hite will be performed around 8:30 a.m. Feb. 18. The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office and the Effingham Coroner’s Office are both still investigating the accident. They are still waiting for the results of the autopsy, the Illinois State Police reconstruction report, and the results of the toxicology test.
