Once off the roadway, the Mountaineer went airborne and hit a utility pole. The force from the impact caused the vehicle to begin to roll.
The Texas Department of Public Safety released the name of the driver as 30-year-old Sandra Patricia Diaz of San Benito.
Diaz and three children were the only occupants of the vehicle and no other vehicles were involved in the accident.
The three children nor Diaz were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.
All three of the children were transported to Valley Baptist Hospital in Harlingen for treatment. The two girls in the accident were said to have only minor injuries and were treated and released.
The little boy in the accident was reported to have had a collapsed lung as a result of the accident. He is considered in critical condition but is stable.
Diaz was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of the injuries she sustained in the accident. The police do not suspect impaired driving to be a factor in the miscalculation of the speed the curve was taken.
The Texas Department of Public Safety assisted the Willacy County Sheriff’s Office on the scene of the accident. The investigation is considered ongoing.
