The investigators believe the man was distracted, causing him not to see the big rig in time. He collided with the side of the tank trailer without braking. The crash impact left the car badly wrecked, and Rodriguez, a passenger, was trapped inside.
Emergency crews used jaws of life to extricate the man, and medics took him to CRMC in critical condition. The highway patrol said Wiggin sustained moderate injuries but was able to exit the vehicle himself. He received treatment at the same hospital.
The investigators noted that the intersection has a 2-way stop for Sunnyside only, and they do not believe that drugs or alcohol played a role in the occurrence. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
Distracted driving is one of the common causes of motor vehicle collisions, and it takes a distracted driver about three seconds to crash. Common distractions include calling, texting, eating, changing CDs, and sometimes heated arguments.
Drivers must reduce the above and pay rapt attention to the roadway. Doing this would help reduce crash and fatality rates.
