The medics who responded to a 911 call about the accident rushed the boy to the hospital, where he is in critical, but stable condition. Over an hour after the near-fatal crash, Etcheverria had a change of mind and returned to the scene of the accident.
The police then arrested him for felony hit-and-run involving injury. There is no information on the suspect’s bond or the date of his arraignment, and the investigation is ongoing.
A hit-and-run accident is not uncommon in California and the United States, with about 11% of all accidents involving a hit-and-run driver. People flee from accident scenes out of panic for the legal issues that would arise, while others do it for nefarious reasons.
The California Vehicle Code provides that anyone involved in an accident should stop at the scene or the nearest place where traffic won’t get impeded. The person should call 911 if there’s an injury or death and provide the authorities with relevant personal information and details of the crash.
Those involved in a hit-and-run accident should contact a car injury attorney for advice on his or her rights and liabilities, and for representation.
