For reasons that have yet to be determined, Byars crossed over the centerline and entered the southbound lane in front of Wilson and her children. The accident occurred north of the Salmon Creek Bridge.
The two vehicles collided. Byars, Wilson, and Wilson’s 5-year-old daughter Juniper Kate were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by medical personnel.
The other two children in the van, 7-year-old Elliot and 3-year-old Iona, were injured and transported to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland for treatment of their injuries. They were later transferred to Randall Children’s Hospital.
The most recent reports indicated that the children suffered from broken bones and spleen lacerations from the accident. Iona is currently being kept in a medically induced coma.
Wilson is survived by her husband Brian. He is a nurse at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center. A GoFundMe page has been created to help the grieving father and the surviving children with medical expenses during this time. As of March 9, the fundraiser has raised $125,546 for the family.
Police are still investigating to determine a cause for Byars crossing into the path of Wilson’s van.
