In the eastbound lane, going toward Riceboro was a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado truck driven by 35-year-old Robert Stauffer.
Dixon’s Impala collided head-on with Stauffer’s truck. The impact was enough to split the Impala into two separate pieces. The parts of the vehicle came to rest in the shoulder of the highway with the rear wheels facing upward and the front of the vehicle facing the right side up.
Dixon was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision. It has not been commented upon if Stauffer was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident.
He was found lying in the road with seriously fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene after the paramedics tried to revive him, but his injuries were too severe.
Emergency services took Stauffer via ambulance to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah. He is reported to have suffered serious injuries in the accident. There has been no new update as to his condition.
The Georgia State Patrol is currently investigating the accident. There has been no determination as to what caused Dixon to veer off into oncoming traffic. It is possible that he was tired or distracted.
The influence of drugs and/or alcohol have not been ruled out as a cause of the accident. Testing will be done by the coroner to determine if this played a role or not.
E.B. Cooper Highway was reopened shortly after the accident had been cleared.
