Preliminary reports indicate that 21-year-old Valerie Carranco was driving north on Interstate 27 in her Toyota Corolla when she went off of the road and struck a guardrail.
Another vehicle traveling northbound on Interstate 27 saw the accident occur and stopped to help Carranco and call 911. At that time Carranco did not seem to be too badly injured from her initial collision with the guardrail.
As Carranco was at the Corolla collecting her belongings, a Ford F-350 that was traveling northbound on Interstate 27 struck Carranco and the vehicle. The reason why the Ford hit Carranco’s Corolla is unclear.
The Corolla was then pushed into the vehicle of the person who stopped to help.
Carranco was transported from the scene to UMC for the serious injuries that she sustained in the accident. There have been no updates regarding her condition at the present time.
There have been no other injuries reported with this accident.
The report did not indicate if seat belts were used by those in the accident.
There has not been any indication as to why Carranco’s car left the road and hit the guardrail. The Major Crash Unit for the Lubbock Police Department is currently investigating the accident.
It is unclear if drugs and/or alcohol were a factor in the accident.
There have been no charges or citations issued in conjunction with this accident. This is liable to change once the investigation into the accident is completed by the Lubbock Police Department.
