Robert Criss at about 12:50 p.m. Monday was southbound on Interstate 57 near mile marker 35 in Union County when he lost control of his vehicle, according to troopers. Car accident reports state Robert Criss went off the road and overcorrected, causing his vehicle to roll multiple times in the southbound lanes of traffic.
The vehicle finally came to a rest on the side of the road, where it burst into flame, troopers said. The vehicle’s occupants were able to get out of the vehicle before first responders arrived on scene, according to car accident reports.
The Crisses were taken via air ambulance to a local hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries, troopers said. Baker also suffered life-threatening injuries, but was taken to a hospital via ambulance, car accident reports state.
Updated condition reports for all three patients weren’t available Tuesday afternoon.
The southbound lanes of Interstate 57 were closed for about an hour Monday while investigators worked at the scene. It is unclear from car accident reports available Tuesday whether factors like intoxication, speed or inattentive driving are thought to have contributed to the crash.
Troopers have not announced any charges or citations, and the investigation is ongoing.
