Deputies said they were called at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday to mile marker 13 on Catalina Highway to investigate a vehicle that apparently had gone off the roadway. According to car accident reports, emergency personnel located a vehicle that had plunged “several hundred yards” down a canyon.
It took rescuers several hours to make their way down to Zamora’s vehicle. A sheriff’s department press release said the recovery was made challenging due to the “dangerous terrain” and poor weather conditions in the area.
Zamora and his vehicle were located, but Zamora succumbed to his wounds before he could be transported from the scene for emergency medical treatment, according to car accident reports.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the crash. Authorities did say in the press release that they suspect impairment was a factor in the wreck.
Deputies were joined at the scene by the department’s search-and-rescue squad, the Mount Lemmon Fire Department, the Southern Arizona Rescue Association and the Rural Metro Fire Department, according to the press release.
A Facebook profile that appeared to be linked to Zamora was peppered with tributes Monday afternoon.
“Your mindset and heart (were) truly (those of) someone beautiful and motivating,” one friend wrote.
“You were just such a fun, positive, happy, wonderful guy who would always make sure everyone around you was good and having fun and staying positive,” another friend wrote.
