In a press release by the California Highway Patrol, Officer Ross Lee said that the suspect was behind the wheel of a 2005 Dodge Durango traveling on Highway 85. At about 10:20 pm., the car was on the southbound lane of the highway, south of Cottle Road.
Witnesses said that the suspect was driving erratically, weaving in and out of traffic, and going beyond the legal 65 mph limit of the roadway. Khanna lost control of the vehicle, and the Dodge overturned several times before resting on its wheels.
Three male passengers out of the six occupants of the vehicle died at the scene from injuries sustained. A female passenger succumbed to her wounds at the hospital, while a fourth male survived with non-life-threatening injuries.
Another CHP officer, Mike Sakamoto, said that two of the deceased persons were ejected from the vehicle, and it is unclear if the Dodge occupants wore seat belts. Khanna sustained minor injuries, and the investigators determined he was under the influence of drugs and (or) alcohol when he crashed.
The authorities booked the driver into jail on a DUI charge, and he could also face charges for vehicular manslaughter, hence the top accident lawyer. The tragic wreck led to the closure of the southbound lanes of the highway. Witnesses who wish to give a statement should contact the CHP-Gilroy Hollister Office.
