An accident along Interstate 285 on Wednesday, March 18, has left one driver dead and another injured. The accident occurred around 1:00 p.m. but caused traffic problems until almost 4:00 p.m. while police investigated and cleared the scene.
According to police reports, an Isuzu box truck was being driven westbound on Interstate 285 when the driver’s side front tire blew out. This caused the driver of the truck to lose control, and it caused damage to two other vehicles before coming to rest on the left shoulder of the road. The back end of the truck remained partially in the lane of travel.

Shortly after stopping, a silver Toyota Corolla driven by 38-year-old Phu-Long Pham was driving in the left lane and crashed into the back-end of the Isuzu.
Pham was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by emergency medical services.
One of the drivers of a car the Isuzu initially hit was transported to an area hospital. Their injuries were classified as minor at the scene of the accident.
Although the driver of the Isuzu lost control of the truck, the accident could have been worse. When a tire blows out, especially in the front of the vehicle, there will be a strong pull in the direction of the blown tire. In the case of the Isuzu, the driver would have experienced a strong pull from the left side.
If he had applied the breaks hard, he would have spun out, which could have caused more vehicle damage and injuries to bystanders on the road. Police are still investigating the circumstances of the accident.
There was no information released on the other car involved in the accident or the driver of the Isuzu.
