At the same time, an officer was responding to a call when he struck Rincon on the bicycle. Emergency medical services pronounced Rincon dead at the scene of the accident.
Details of the accident are vague at this time. We do know that the officer involved was not injured.
The state of California only requires that those who are under the age of 18 to wear a helmet while riding a bicycle on public streets, bike paths, and trails. Those who are 18 and older are not required to wear a helmet.
The report did not indicate if Rincon was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. In any kind of bicycle accident, head trauma is always a possibility, even with a helmet on. The body is extremely vulnerable to injuries due to the lack of protection on a bicycle.
It has not been released if the police officer had his lights on at the time of the accident and why Rincon didn’t see them if he did. The accident is still an active investigation.
