The California Highway Patrol said a black Chevrolet sedan struck the woman as she crossed the intersection, and the paramedics could do nothing for her. The cause of the accident remains under investigation, and there’s no information on the driver of the sedan at the time of this report.
When a car hits a pedestrian, it leaves the person with traumatic injuries that are harder on the body of an older individual. The primary cause of pedestrian deaths is a head injury, which includes skull fractures, concussions, hemorrhages, and intracranial swelling.
Head injuries occur when a person’s head hit the hood of a vehicle, windshield, or a surrounding hard surface, like the floor. Pedestrians also suffer torso injuries that end in the rupture of internal organs.
Lower body injuries also occur, and they are not fatal. They include hip and pelvis fractures, abrasions, torn knee ligaments, and are caused by the body making contact with the front bumper or hood.
The best way to prevent pedestrian deaths is for people to cross using the designated crosswalks, and only when the traffic lights allow. Drivers should give pedestrians the right of way, and drive within the speed limit.
