The man was heading west on Bancroft Avenue when he struck a parked vehicle on the north curb and proceeded to hit four men on the sidewalk. King sustained severe wounds and died at the scene.
The other people on the sidewalk, whom the police identified as men aged 39, 45, and 50, were severely injured and taken to the hospital for treatment. Police said one of the men is critical, while two are in stable condition.
The suspect tried to flee the scene on foot but was apprehended by the police before he could get far. The young man was arrested on suspicion of DUI and is facing criminal charges of vehicular manslaughter, hit-and-run causing injury, and DUI for either alcohol or drugs.
The police also believe that speed might have contributed to the tragic accident. OPD has asked anyone who witnessed the crash and has helpful information to contact police traffic investigators on their listed line.
Under California law, King, if convicted of the charges against him, faces jail time and suspension of his driver’s license until a court decides otherwise.
