Authorities have identified the pedestrian who was involved in an auto-pedestrian collision as 37-year-old Velton Jermaine Johnson. The accident occurred just before 10 p.m. on March 16, along East 7th Street in Long Beach.
Based on the report released to the public, Johnson was trying to cross 7th Street when the first vehicle collided with him. The force from that collision sent Johnson into the other lane where a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee then hit him. The driver, a 61-year-old woman, stopped and dialed 911.

The initial driver in the collision did not stop, and the reports indicated that they fled the scene.
The Long Beach Fire Department and the paramedics responded to the scene of the accident. They were not successful in reaching Johnson in time to take him to the hospital. They pronounced him dead at the scene of the accident.
There have been no arrests or citations issued in the accident at this time. Police are still searching for the driver who fled the scene of the accident.
Johnson was a social studies teacher at the Youth Build Charter School in Los Angeles, but lived in Long Beach. No other details regarding arrangements for Johnson have been released to the public at this time.
