The suspect was reportedly heading southbound on Parker Street, approaching an intersection which had the red signal up. Chavez failed to obey the stop signal and entered the intersection out of turn, thereby crashing into an eastbound vehicle driven by a 58-year-old Amarillo man.
The car was reportedly crossing the intersection on a green light at the time, and the impact pushed him into a building on the 4600 block of Parker. It’s driver, George Kenneth Ulibarri, did not survive the wreck.
Meanwhile, Chavez’s car swayed off the roadway and struck a utility pole before rolling onto its side. The suspect was able to remove himself from the overturned vehicle and flee the scene. Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigation agents caught up with the suspect a few blocks away, where he was hiding in a shed.
Detectives said Amarillo Police and the DPS were in search of the suspect before the crash, on a felony assault warrant. They later took him into custody after taking him to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Chavez remains held at the Randall County Jail on his felony warrant and additional charges of murder and accident resulting in death.
