Defreeuw at about 7 p.m. Tuesday was driving in the 3000 block of West Irving Park Road on Chicago’s North Side when he lost control of his vehicle, police said. The vehicle veered off the roadway, crashing into a light pole and a building, car accident reports state.
Emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene of the wreck, but Defreeuw succumbed to his injuries before he could be transported to a hospital for treatment. It is unclear from car accident reports whether Defreeuw was alone in the vehicle, but no other injuries were listed.
Car accident reports describe the damage the crash caused to both the building and Defreeuw’s vehicle as extensive.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy, which showed that multiple injuries inflicted by the wreck caused Defreeuw’s death. His death was listed as an accident on car accident reports.
The Chicago Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating the incident. Authorities have not yet said whether factors like intoxication or speeding might have contributed to the incident.
