On-site investigations showed the injured victim was traveling in a vehicle alongside a 25-year-old driver identified as Oscar Madrigal. Just as the motorist neared the Gooseberry Lane area, he lost control of his car, causing it to veer off the highway and overturn.
The toddler, who police said was using proper restraints at the time, ended up expelled from the car before the vehicle eventually halted. The boy sustained multiple severe injuries in the crash.
Emergency responders showed up a few minutes later and transported the four-year-old to Valley Children’s Hospital via air ambulance. Medical personnel listed the young lad in serious condition.
Meanwhile, Madrigal did not suffer serious injuries in the wreck. Officers determined the motorist was driving while intoxicated, thereby endangering the toddler’s life. They detained him on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.
