Preliminary reports obtained from the CHP showed that the victim had been crawling on the north side of the roadway before encountering the crash. The motorist involved was driving a 2017 Hyundai on the northbound lanes. Police said Randy Longnecker, 59, of Modesto collided with the victim before he could try to avoid a crash.
The unidentified pedestrian died before medical aid arrived, and medics pronounced him deceased at the scene. The victim’s identity remains undisclosed pending notification of family members.
Longnecker waited at the crash site until officers arrived. He cooperated during the investigation, without fuss. The reports did not indicate whether the driver was speeding, intoxicated, or distracted when he struck the pedestrian, or if he is facing traffic-related charges.
An investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing, headed by the California Highway Patrol.
Auto accident attorneys can also conduct an independent probe to determine if the full liability of the accident lies with the motorist, or if external factors contributed.
