Investigators said that several drivers parked to help the motorcyclist, but there was nothing they could do for him. The medics upon their arrival pronounced Horton dead, and the Orange County Coroner Division of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department identified him.
The CHP has not ruled out the involvement of another vehicle or person as the investigation is ongoing. The police issued a SigAlert closing off the affected four lanes of the freeway while they investigated. There is no additional information.
There are over 800 000 motorcycle riders in California, and accident reports show that there are many solo motorcycle crashes. The fatality rate is high due to bikes’ fleeting nature and the fact that a biker has no protection from the impact of a collision.
The Cal-DMV advises motorcyclists to ensure they have on the US-DOT compliant helmet when on the bike. They should also have on protective apparels, and beyond that, motorcycle riders should ride with care at all times.
