Police identified the young mother as 20-year-old Miriam Vargas. The child that she had with her was a 3-month-old. The child was present in the car when she crashed through the gate.
Based on the accident and suspicion of the woman’s story, they performed a field sobriety test. Her blood-alcohol content did not get released, but she ended up arrested at the scene.
Luckily, there were no reported injuries in conjunction with the accident.
Police charged Vargas with one count of driving while intoxicated with a child and one count of child endangerment.
It is not clear if she has had her arraignment yet, but there is still a possibility that she will be facing more charges.
The penalty for driving under the influence with a child in the car is a felony offense. The offense is punishable by a fine of $10,000 and up to a two-year sentence in state jail.
The single count of child endangerment is also a felony offense. The punishment for this offense is up to 20 years in prison.
The investigation is still ongoing. More updates will be available as information is released.
