Initial investigations conducted by the police revealed that the driver of the vehicle that caused the initial accident was driving west on Columbus Street. As they approached Union Avenue, they fell asleep at the wheel. When they awoke, they overcorrected, as they entered the intersection at the red light.
The vehicle then went up onto the sidewalk, where it hit collided with Arrenaviz, who was sitting at the corner waiting for the light. The driver of the vehicle did not sustain any injuries.
Arrenaviz sustained fatal injuries as a result of the accident and was pronounced dead at the scene. Another vehicle collided with the car that hit Arrenaviz, but they were not injured in the accident either.
The driver of the car that hit Arrenaviz did not appear to be impaired and was released at the scene.
A GoFundMe account has been set up to help the family with the unexpected expenses of Arrenaviz’s death. The family said that he was on his way to another family member’s house to eat when the accident happened.
The Bakersfield Police Department is still investigating the accident. It is unclear at this time if the driver will be facing charges for the accident.
