The young man is also facing two counts of misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance. A preliminary report by the Oakland Police Department showed that on Monday, March 30th, the suspect was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu.
Rodriguez was going over the speed limit in the 5400-block of Bancroft Avenue at 6:51 a.m. when he swerved left to pass a vehicle in front of him. Immediately after, he entered back into the westbound lanes and struck a parked car.
Next, Rodriguez swerved into residences on the street and struck four pedestrians standing by a driveway. Three of the four survived with injuries, while Desmond King, 29, died at the scene. The Chevrolet later overturned on its side, and the suspect fled.
The young man was apprehended shortly afterward, and the survivors identified him as the driver. A field sobriety test found that he was intoxicated, and a search of the wrecked car uncovered a wrapped dollar bill. Police believed it contained cocaine.
The police then arrested Rodriguez and booked him into the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin. He remains in custody until he meets his bond of $380 000. He would also need a top accident lawyer for representation.
