Michelle Cantrell of Round Rock, Texas, is speaking out against the hidden dangers that she and her family experienced with their daughter’s memory foam mattress right after the holidays.
Cantrell states that right before the holidays the family was getting ready to go out-of-town when they decided to clean up around the house, washing clothes, and getting things packed up. They decided that it was the perfect opportunity for them to wash the mattress cover that was on the memory foam mattress she slept on.

When they took the cover off the mattress, they noticed that there was a small tear in the mattress. Not thinking anything major could come from such a small tear in a mattress they went about their business and the mattress was literally all over the house at that point.
Once the family was out of town, Cantrell noticed that she was feeling itchy after putting on a shirt that she had washed with the mattress cover. After investigating the shirt a little closer she found what she later identified as shards of fiberglass that had come from the memory foam mattress.
She stated that you would never even know it was there until you began to itch or start coughing. They reached out to the manufacturer, DHP Furniture, out of Canada. They have filed a claim.
DHP Furniture responded to Cantrell stating that they test and certify their mattresses with a third-party lab, and they meet or exceed all regulations. The flammability requirements are often met by using a composite with fiberglass threads.
Cantrell is now warning others about this. She doesn’t know how long her daughter slept in the fiberglass mess prior to discovering it. The family doctor has confirmed that if the itching and coughing cease, they should be fine from the exposure they had.
The family’s insurance company advised them to call in a professional cleaning service after they had tried for days to clean the fiberglass up. It took a team wearing hazmat gear and six different times to rid the home of the fiberglass. They even had to replace the washer and dryer.
The company that makes the mattress has offered to replace it for them, free of charge. They have said nothing else about the other debts that the family has now accrued as a part of this nightmare.
