The paramedics took Martinez to Brooke Army Medical Center where he passed away. They also took a 14-year-old passenger in the Scion to the hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. The police said that the teenagers were not wearing seat belts when the accident happened.
The driver of the SUV, a 27-year-old woman and her 1-year-old passenger received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries at University Hospital. The SAPD believes the two will make a complete recovery. There is no additional information.
According to the Center for Disease Control, at least 46% of teenagers involved in fatal accidents were not wearing seat belts. The latter reduce crash-related injuries and deaths by about half. Also, failure to strap down is a traffic offense punishable by a ticket, and the CDC wants states to strengthen the enforcement of seat belt law to mitigate the danger drivers and passengers face.
