The vehicle was initially driving at a high rate of speed on Interstate 80 and ascended the Carquinez Bridge at the same speed. For reasons still under investigation, the motorist lost control of the SUV, causing it to drive off the bridge. Dashcam footage from another vehicle captured the incident. The video also showed the car slamming into a freight train facing sideways sometime during the mishap.
When emergency crews arrived, they found the four commuters, aged 19-22, unresponsive with fatal injuries. They declared them deceased at the scene, according to the Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office, who later identified the victims.
The Coroner said Kyle Ericson and Perla Navarro, both 19, died in the accident, alongside 21-year-old Christopher Mata and 22-year-old Cecilia Ayala. Investigations revealed that Navorro was two months pregnant.
The CHP investigators are yet to establish if speed was the sole factor in the crash, or if other traffic issues contributed. The investigations are still in the works.
In such situations, it is advisable for the victims’ families to seek counsel from auto accident attorneys, and ultimately hire one as a legal representative.
