A traffic collision or motor vehicle accident occurs when a car collides with another vehicle, pedestrian, animal, road debris, or other stationary obstruction like trees, poles, or buildings. Collisions often result in injury, disability, death, and property damage, as well as financial costs to both the society and individuals involved.
Several factors lead to traffic accidents, including vehicle design, speed of operation, road environment, driving skills, inexperience, impairment due to drugs or alcohol, and behaviors like distracted driving and street racing. These factors can be mitigated by drivers and state traffic agencies with the creation of rules by the latter and the obedience by the former.
Motorists should always practice safe road habits for their safety, their passengers, and other road users. Those who disobey traffic rules are liable to tickets and fines, and in cases of death or bodily harm, jail time.
