According to the reports provided by the Chicago Police Department, the boy was riding a bike on the roadside, alongside two other riders. A work-issued Ford Econoline van, driven by Gerrero, suddenly drifted into the path of the young cyclist and ran him over from behind. The boy suffered major injuries in the collision.
Medics transported the victim to Christ Medical Center in critical condition. He succumbed to his injuries moments after his treatment commenced. None of the two other cyclists present at the time suffered harm, the accident reports confirmed.
Meanwhile, Guerrero left the scene of the accident after hitting the boy. Officers eventually traced him to his West Lawn home using a fallen license plate discovered at the scene. Deputies arrested Guerrero on suspicions of leaving the scene of an accident and failing to report a crash with injury or death. The suspect also faces additional charges in connection with the fatal hit-and-run accident.
Cook County Judge Charles Beach reiterated the importance of remaining at the scene of the crash after an accident until law enforcement arrives.
