Preliminary investigations indicated that one of the vehicles was a 2006 Dodge Ram, driven by 75-year-old Charles Gartin, of Russell, Iowa. A 2007 Mack Truck tractor, operated by William Toops, a 45-year-old resident of Kirkwood, was traveling closely behind the Dodge.
Gartin suddenly tried to negotiate an improper turn at the interchange. As a result, the truck struck the Dodge from behind, causing severe damages. The two occupants of the Dodge, including Gartin, and his wife Charlene Gartin, 75, suffered severe injuries.
First responders conveyed the injured victims to a local hospital for treatment. Toops emerged from the two-vehicle wreck unscathed.
Traffic officers cited Charles Gartin for making an improper turn. No other detail about the crash is available at this time.
