The Cook County Medical examiner’s office disclosed the victim’s identity as Aalana McDonald, of Harvey. An autopsy conducted on the girl revealed that she died from injuries sustained in an accident.
Investigators gathered that the victim was running through the row of vehicles parked on the curb while chasing a dog. Just then, a southbound car, traveling south on Turlington Avenue, collided with the girl. The motorist reportedly failed to sight the victim in time to avoid a crash.
McDonald suffered fatal injuries, and emergency responders pronounced her deceased at the scene, at precisely 7:53 p.m. The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement without incident. The Harvey Police Department failed to provide additional details about the traffic collision in the accident reports.
Vehicle-pedestrian collisions are one of the leading causes of traffic-related deaths and injuries in the United States. A large percentage of these accidents result from impaired drivers and pedestrians, unsafe vehicle speeds, or the use of electronic devices by motorists and pedestrians.
Paying attention to these predisposing factors can help one avoid the future occurrences of such incidents, thereby making the roads safer for commuters.
